Why ARFF Training Is Changing
ARFF teams operate 24/7, often with limited windows for formal training. Removing staff from operations for long training sessions can directly impact readiness, coverage, and response capability.
At the same time, compliance expectations continue to increase. Airports and emergency services must demonstrate ongoing competency, audit readiness, and alignment with updated procedures, equipment and safety standards. New technology, revised aircraft designs, evolving firefighting techniques and a growing focus on firefighter health and wellbeing all require continual upskilling rather than occasional retraining.
In this environment, traditional long format training is no longer practical or sufficient. Learning and development programs are shifting toward short, targeted training that fits within operational workflows and supports continuous capability building.
A Modular Approach Built for Operational Reality
To meet these demands, we have adopted a modular learning approach designed specifically for complex operational environments like airports.
The new ARFF courses range from one to four hours in duration, allowing individuals and teams to strengthen specific competencies without compromising operational readiness. Teams can choose the modules most relevant to their roles or operational priorities.
This modular approach ensures learning is targeted, flexible, and can be scaled across the department as needed. It also supports faster knowledge absorption and more frequent reinforcement of critical skills.
For training managers, it also enables greater flexibility in planning, easier integration into annual training programs, and clearer alignment between training activity and operational risk.
Introducing 32 New ARFF Courses
The expanded ARFF faculty includes 32 new courses designed to build essential competencies across every level of an ARFF department.
From new recruits to experienced firefighters and future leaders, the courses deliver targeted, practical learning aligned to real operational needs.
Covering operational, technical, leadership and wellbeing areas, they support safe, effective and compliant emergency response in complex aviation environments.
The courses include:
- ARFF vehicles, equipment and service maintenance
- Aircraft and airport familiarisation
- Firefighting using water, foam and dry powder
- Engine, undercarriage, helicopter and structural fire response
- Rescue operations including lift rescues, stabilisation, tools, ladders, knots and lines
- Gas detection and fire extinguisher use
- Leadership and incident command
- Aerodrome Emergency Plan application
- Task and resource management
- Firefighter health, wellbeing and fitness
