The Power of Comprehensive Training for Airport Professionals

Lyat Mason, Aerodromes Safety Standards Manager at the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority overseeing Freetown International Airport, has spent over a decade in the world of civil aviation safety, ensuring that operations at the airport run smoothly and safely. With experience in engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance, she knew the importance of enhancing her skill set. Although her practical knowledge had grown substantially, she realized that a formal qualification would not only complement her hands-on experience but also strengthen her ability to manage complex airport operations.

“I had worked with airport operators for four years and had been overseeing civil aviation safety for ten years. To take my career further, I needed to attain a professional certification in airport operations,” Lyat explains.

But a turning point came when she learned about the Airport Operations Diploma Program (AODP). The program not only met her educational needs but also aligned perfectly with her career aspirations. More importantly, it combined three essential certificate courses into one comprehensive package:

“This offered a bigger and better package compared to the course I initially intended to pursue,” she adds.

An Extensive Learning Experience

Enrolling in the AODP marked a pivotal moment in Lyat’s professional journey. The three courses worked in unison to provide her with a complete understanding of airport operations. She particularly appreciated how each module was well detailed. The program’s thoroughness was clear—“No stone was left unturned,” she says.

The structure of the courses, filled with practical exercises and real-world examples, allowed her to immediately apply this newfound knowledge in her day-to-day work. “The real case scenarios gave me hands-on experience that connected the theory with reality,” Lyat recalls.

A Program to Recommend

When asked if she would recommend the AODP to her colleagues, Lyat answered a resounding “Yes.”

“The course is all-encompassing,” she says. “It touches on every critical aspect of airport operations and provides a structured, detailed, and highly practical learning experience.”

The balance between theory and application was key to Lyat’s positive experience. She found the courses to be well-tailored to the challenges and requirements of airports, making it an ideal option for professionals like her who are looking to enhance their careers.

Future Training

For Lyat, the journey of learning is far from over. After completing the AODP, she’s eager to continue developing her skills and has already set her sights on future qualifications. “I’m keen to explore the Certificate in Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services and the Airfield Maintenance Courses,” she shares enthusiastically.

Lyat’s experience with ACI’s Airport Operations Diploma Program is a testament to the value of structured, comprehensive training in helping professionals advance their careers and meet the increasing demands of the airport industry.
