On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of assessing competence in workplace training.
  • Identify a range of assessment tools and determine when each is most appropriate.
  • Describe the process of planning, designing, trialing, and finalizing assessment tools.
  • Define the principles of reliability and validity, and explain how they are both important for ensuring fair and consistent assessment outcomes.
  • Explain how to evaluate training effectiveness using Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Evaluation.
  • Explain the importance of maintaining accurate training and assessment records and describe appropriate methods for doing so.

  • Methods for assessing competence.
  • The key steps involved in developing assessment tools.
  • Designing valid and reliable assessments.
  • Ensuring assessments are balanced, accessible, and practical.
  • Common question types and when they’re most effective.
  • Effectively assessing different levels of learning (Bloom’s Taxonomy).
  • Pitfalls to avoid when writing assessment questions.
  • On-the-job observations vs. simulated assessments.
  • The importance of observation checklists and qualified assessors.
  • Why it’s important to evaluate your training.
  • Tried-and-tested methods for effectively evaluating training effectiveness and demonstrating return on investment.
  • What records you need to keep, why it matters, and methods for doing so.

This course includes an integrated online assessment.

Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion for the course.
