This course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to safely and competently inspect, maintain, and test ARFF operational vehicles. The course is mapped to and aligns with the following international standards:

→ ICAO Airport Services Manual, Part 1 Rescue and Fire Fighting – Chapter 17.

NPFA 1911 – Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Emergency Vehicles.

→ NFPA 1900 – Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicles, Automotive Fire Apparatus, Wildland Fire Apparatus, and Automotive Ambulances.

Competencies Obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Correctly identify a vehicle due for inspection, testing, and/or maintenance.
  • Determine the type of inspection, test, and/or maintenance required. 
  • Describe the requirements for inspections, tests, and/or maintenance of ARFF operational vehicles.
  • Explain the process for returning vehicles to full operational readiness.
  • Record results and/or report faults in accordance with organizational procedures.

  • The importance of regular vehicle inspections, maintenance, and testing.
  • Applicable standards and codes.
  • Key types of inspections for operational fire vehicles.  
  • Standards for vehicle maintenance.
  • Required knowledge and qualifications for personnel conducting vehicle maintenance. 
  • Maintenance work areas and tools. 
  • Vehicle performance testing.
  • Benefits of effective record keeping.
  • Sample ARFF vehicle inspection checklist.

This course includes an integrated online assessment.

Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion for the course.
