Maintenance of Markings

Overview

The Maintenance of Markings course addresses surface markings used on airfield pavements, such as runways, taxiways, aprons, and paved airfield roadways.

It describes marking methodologies, methods for assessing marking condition, and ways to increase marking longevity by completing marking maintenance using proper techniques, materials, and equipment.

The course can be taken as part of the Certificate in Airfield Maintenance for those wishing to gain a more complete understanding of airfield maintenance, including best practices for the maintenance of airfield pavements and electrical systems and NAVAIDs, as well as general airfield maintenance, including snow removal, night maintenance, drainage facility maintenance, and grass maintenance.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of maintaining airfield pavement markings to ensure they remain clearly visible at all times.
  • Explain the importance of, and techniques for, preparing the pavement surface prior to the application of new markings.
  • Describe best practices for the removal and application of pavement markings.

    • Techniques and equipment for preparing the pavement surface prior to the application of new markings.
  3. Pavement Marking Removal and Application
    • The removal of existing markings.
    • Equipment used to apply markings.
    • Key considerations when applying paint on asphalt versus concrete pavements.

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment.

Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
