This course will introduce you to the key principles and concepts of Safety Management Systems (SMS) and the U.S. regulations that pertain to them.

It will also explore the four basic components of SMS required by the FAA.

This course can be taken as part of the Certificate I in Airside Safety (USA) for those wishing to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the key elements of airside safety and how these elements combine as part of the airport’s overall SMS.

  • The key elements of a Safety Policy.
  • The importance, and key elements, of Safety Risk Management.
  • The steps involved in identifying hazards, analyzing the risk they pose, and implementing and tracking mitigations.
  • The FAA’s requirements for Safety Risk Management documentation.
  • The importance of non-punitive hazard reporting.
  • The important role that Safety Assurance plays within SMS.
  • FAA requirements for monitoring safety performance and reporting safety issues.
  • The key components of Safety Promotion – culture, training, and communication.

This course includes an integrated online assessment.

Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
