Understanding Security Threat and Risk Assessment

Overview

The Understanding Security Threat and Risk Assessment course describes an Airports Council International (ACI) approved model of risk management.

It will equip participants with a basic understanding of threat and risk, and the process of making a security risk assessment.

This course can be taken as part of the Certificate in Airport Security for those wishing to deepen their understanding of the key concepts and best practices associated with airport security and gain the knowledge required to address modern airport security challenges.

Competencies Obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of risk management to the management of airport security.
  • Explain the difference between ‘threat’ and ‘risk’.
  • Describe the components of a risk assessment.
  • Conduct a basic security risk assessment.
  • Explain the terms and concepts behind any risk assessment provided to them.

  5. Assessing the Likelihood / Threat Level
    • Key considerations when assessing the likelihood of a threat scenario occurring. 
    • Assigning a likelihood rating. 
    • Methods for evaluating the reliability of information and intelligence received. 
  6. Identifying Consequences
    • Conducting a consequence assessment.
    • The use of consequence matrices. 
  7. Identifying Mitigation Measures and Vulnerabilities
    • Conducting a vulnerability assessment. 
    • Types of mitigating measures. 
    • Identifying vulnerabilities. 
  8. Calculating Risk and Taking Action
    • The use of risk matrices to define the risk level. 
    • Key considerations when implementing additional mitigating measures. 
  9. Completing the Risk Management Cycle
    • The need for ongoing review and revision of risk assessments.

    • Sharing risk assessment results with key stakeholders.

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment.  

Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
