Jonathan: Building a Career in Airports without Prior Aviation Experience

When Jonathan joined Indianapolis Airport Authority, he had no previous experience in aviation. After about a year, he realised that most contracts and decisions coming through his office were tied in some way to airport operations.

To strengthen his understanding, he enrolled in the U.S. Airport Professional Program. The learning gave him a structured and clear overview of how airports in the United States work. This included airside and landside operations, safety, regulation, business management, governance, and planning.

After completing the program, Jonathan now feels better equipped to support his organization at a deeper level. He sees the airport as a complex ecosystem with many connected parts. This perspective helps him contribute more fully to strategic, operational, and business conversations.

Housseny: Contributing More Effectively

Housseny undertook the Diploma in Airport Operations through the Online Learning Centre to gain a stronger understanding of how airports operate. His goal was to learn more about airport operations so that he could spot opportunities to improve operations and revenue at his airport.

After completing the program he says the knowledge he gained lets him work more effectively with different departments and contribute in a more holistic way.

He also notes that, in addition to optimizing revenue, analyzing risk, and designing commercial projects, the course helped him “participate brilliantly in the various evaluations” of the airport’s safety and quality systems (SMS / SMQ).

Lyat: Strengthening Foundation Through Training
Aerodromes Safety Standards Manager, Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (Freetown International Airport)

Lyat has more than a decade of experience in civil aviation safety, engineering, operations, construction and maintenance. She enrolled in the Diploma in Airport Operations to enhance her skillset and build on her many years of aviation experience.

The training helped reinforce her existing knowledge and gave her a formal, structured understanding of airport operations.

She described the course as “all-encompassing” and noted that it touches on every critical aspect of airport operations.
