Overview

The Certificate in Airport Accessibility is designed to assist airport operators to make their airports more accessible for persons with disabilities, including those with reduced mobility.

It covers the key infrastructure and architectural factors to consider when designing new airport facilities or improving existing ones. It also addresses operational and organisational measures designed to improve the travel experience for persons with disabilities.

The course covers both the simple ideas that can improve the overall airport experience for persons with disabilities as well as more innovative and advanced aids and supports.

Learning Objectives

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Define the term disability and understand different types of disability.
  • Identify best practices in accessible airport design and construction.
  • Describe how airport practices and procedures can be implemented and adapted to best assist persons with disabilities.
  • Explain the key accessibility considerations at each stage of the passenger journey through the airport.
  • Recognise the importance of coordinating with the various stakeholders operating at the airport to assist persons with disabilities.

The Certificate in Airport Accessibility consists of the following five modules:

  • Defining disability and understanding different types of disabilities.

Methods for Maximising Airport Accessibility

  • Key methods for maximising accessibility.
  • The passenger journey through the airport – overview and key accessibility considerations.

Maximising Accessibility – Booking, Arrival and Check-in

  • In depth examination of accessibility considerations at booking, arrival and check-in.

Maximising Accessibility – Inside the Terminal

  • In depth examination of accessibility considerations to assist passengers to move through the terminal with the greatest ease.
  • Key accessibility considerations for terminal design and facilities.

Maximising Accessibility – Departure Control, Boarding and Arrival

  • In depth examination of accessibility considerations for the final four stages of the passenger travel journey:
    • Moving through security, passport control and immigration.
    • Waiting in the departure lounge.
    • Boarding the aircraft.
    • Arriving at the destination airport.

Assessment

Each module includes an integrated online assessment.

Candidates must successfully complete all module assessments to receive a Certificate of Completion.
