Safety Management Systems Training (International)

Overview

The Safety Management Systems course introduces participants to the key principles and concepts of Safety Management Systems (SMS), with the goal of increasing aviation safety around the world.

Please note – this course is also available in French and Spanish.

Learning Objectives

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the regulatory framework relevant to airport safety.
  • Understand the organizational nature of accidents and incidents.
  • Explain the key safety principles of a SMS and how they differ from traditional approaches to safety.
  • Understand the basic safety processes of a SMS and how they identify hazards and mitigate risks.
  • Understand the role of the four primary components of a SMS:
    • Safety Policy.
    • Safety Risk Management.
    • Safety Assurance.
    • Safety Promotion.

  • All new employees that require initial safety training as part of their induction process.
  • Existing employees that require initial or recurrent safety training.

  • The key safety principles of a SMS and how they differ from traditional approaches to safety.
  • The basic safety processes of SMS.
  • The similarities between a SMS and a Quality Management System (QMS).
  • How a SMS aids in maintaining and improving safety.

Safety Policy

  • The purpose of a Safety Policy.
  • The key elements in a Safety Policy:
    • Policy Statement.
    • Accountable Executive.
    • Safety Objectives.
    • Organisational Structure.
    • Safety Procedures.

Safety Risk Management

  • Safety Risk Management Techniques:
    • Hazard Identification.
    • Non-Punitive Hazard Reporting.
    • The Risk Assessment Matrix.
    • Safety Risk Tolerability.
    • Risk Mitigation and Tracking.

Safety Assurance

  • Continuous Monitoring.
  • Internal Audits.
  • External Audits.
  • Corrective Action.

Safety Promotion

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment.  

Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
